Hypertension... A Silent Killer - Prevent It

Hypertension means high blood pressure. Blood pressure is the force of blood when it pushes against the wall of your arteries., when it flows through them. Arteries are the blood vessels which carry oxygenated blood from the heart to other parts of the body.

Hypertension is a condition in which there is constant elevation of blood pressure in the arteries. This cause the heart to work harder to pump out the same amount of blood, leading to hardening of arteries, strokes, kidney diseases and heart failure. Hypertension is one of the most common Lifestyle diseases in India.

According to recent estimates by World Health Organization (WHO), hypertension causes 7.5 billion deaths worldwide (around 12.8% of total deaths in a year).

  • A normal blood pressure reading is under 120/80 millimetres of mercury (mmHg).

  • Prehypertension (anything above normal up to 139/89 mmHg.) Here your blood pressure is raised enough to be a warning sign for developing hypertension

  • Hypertension is 140/90 mmHg and above.

Hypertension is known as the “silent killer” because most often it doesn’t come with warning signs or symptoms. When too much blood pushes through the arteries, it causes damages to the arteries. In the heart damage to arteries lead to damage to the heart muscles. Similarly, damage to the arteries in brain leads to stroke and damage to arteries of kidneys, lead to kidney diseases.

The major cause for high blood pressure is sedentary lifestyle and diet but it can be due to genetic factors, age, race, unhealthy gut microbes, consumption of excess pain killers, hormonal abnormalities, sleep apnoea, etc.

What can be done to prevent hypertension?

  • Routine check-ups- Everyone should undergo routine check-ups. You should know your blood pressure and should keep monitoring it.
  • Lifestyle changes

    • Exercise - 30 mins a day - Be physically active
    • Lose weight if you are obese
    • Reduce your salt intake
    • Stop smoking
    • Limit alcohol intake
    • Do not take stress
  • Diet -This is very important factor in preventing hypertension. You can follow a lifelong DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) which is a healthy way of eating. DASH diet restricts your sodium and allows you to eat food and fruits rich in potassium, calcium and magnesium which help you to keep your blood pressure in check.
