Your lifestyle-how you live, eat, emote and think - determines your health. To prevent disease, you may have to change how you live- Brian Carter

What is a lifestyle? A lifestyle is the pattern of living which we follow. It is how we work, what and when we get and how and when we sleep, how much physical activity do we do, whether we smoke or drink alcohol or not.

We as humans, have made tremendous progress in science, arts and technology over the years, but nothing comes free of cost! We have paid the price for our economic development and it is - our changed lifestyle. With the change in our lifestyle, came a crop of disease, known as” lifestyle diseases.” These are also known as “diseases of civilization” or “diseases of longevity”. Internationally they are known as non-communicable (do not spread from one person to another) and chronic diseases (long term).

Lifestyle diseases causes our body to dysfunction and influences our quality of life. In the beginning, there may be no symptoms but later the symptoms appear causing even death of an individual. Lifestyle diseases are now mostly seen in developing countries like India and in the younger age group.

This means that the way we chose to live our lives, mainly contributes to what makes us ill.

Too much of work and stress makes us vulnerable to diseases, physical ailments and emotional breakdowns. Thus, diseases develop due to the type of work we do, our work environment, the food we eat, our exercise habits and stress which we undertake.

In urban living, people eat junk foods, do not follow regular and healthy food patterns and do not exercise. People take tremendous amount of stress, which lead to development of lifestyle diseases.

Lifestyle diseases are conditions are created by us and these diseases are found more frequently in industrialized countries

The main lifestyle diseases are:

  • Heart disease (cardiovascular diseases)

  • Diabetes

  • Hypertension

  • Obesity

  • Dyslipidaemia

  • Liver cirrhosis

  • Stroke

  • Depression

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
