An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” - Benjamin Franklin

In today’s world, more and more people are being a prisoner of lifestyle disease, including young adults and children. This leads to reduction in productivity and hampers the country’s development. As lifestyle diseases run a long-term course, these become a financial burden for a long time for the family.

The main culprit of these so called “Lifestyle diseases” can range from tight and busy work schedules, smoking, alcohol abuse, skipping meals, eating junk food, spending long time in front of computers, stress at schools and work places.

Can we prevent it? And why is prevention so important?

The best way to ensure long and healthy life is not to cure your disease by taking medicines but to avoid that disease completely. Majority of lifestyle diseases can be prevented in the early stages by simple lifestyle changes, early detection and proper management.

How small changes in our day to day lifestyle can prevent major diseases is evident below:

  • Avoiding tobacco use - Stopping smoking cigarettes or consuming tobacco in any forms prevents heart diseases, lung diseases and cancer
  • Being physically active - Choose an activity you like and do it every day. Our heart muscles need exercise to remain healthy. Being active prevents heart diseases, fights obesity and decreases your stress levels.
  • Eat healthy foods- Following a healthy and balanced diet makes you lose weight, lowers your cholesterol levels and reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, dyslipidaemia, obesity and diabetes. High fibre foods, low fat food and fruits and vegetables should be a part of your daily meals.
  • Have a healthy weight- Being overweight and obese increases your chances of heart attack, diabetes, hypertension, obesity and some cancers. Researchers have proved that the risk of heart attack is three times higher in women who are overweight that in those who have a healthy weight.
  • Reduce your stress- Stress can increase you risk for developing heart disease, cholesterol, increased blood pressure and is a potential cause for depression. Take out time to relax.
  • Do not use your car, but walk- This would increase your physical activity and make you fit and prevents all lifestyles diseases.
  • Get yourself screened regularly- Get your health check-up done every 6 months or every year to measure your body cholesterol, blood pressure, sugar levels. If there are any abnormalities, it can be detected and prevented at an early stage.
